Background

Before video games, there were pinball machines. These machines were called the “mechanical precursors of video games”. Like video games, pinball machines created some of the same fears that are associated with video games today.
The first video game was made in 1958 by William A. Higinbotham. He made an electric ping-pong game. Then in 1961, Steve Russell created the game called “Spacewar!”. Because of this he is considered the inventor of video games.

The first home console was the “Odyssey” which was released in 1972 by Magnavox. The “Odyssey” had games already programmed into the console. After that, in 1977, Atari released its first home. It was called the Atari 2600 and it used cartridges instead of having the games already programmed into the console.

A lot of bad games were coming out for the home consoles and was making the business die. Then in the 1980s, Nintendo released the NES. The NES revived the industry. After this a bunch of companies started releasing home consoles, such as the Xbox made by Microsoft and the Playstation made by Sony. With these new consoles there were new ways to make games and these new games looked nothing like they did before.

Without video games “the development of microprocessors, broadband networks and display technology” has been pushed further than ever. We might not have computers or TVs the way we do today without the help of video games.

I didn't realize how long home consoles have been around. For some reason, I thought they just came out in the 80s. Good background information for us. One source was included, but no vocab words.

Don't listen to Paul he's a jerk... No offence Paul! Anyway, I like your blog Matt, it's cool how you made it short and to the point. The only thing I'd say is maybe you should go a little into detail to explain what some of the things are like consoles and stuff... You know for the people who know nothing about your toppic (like me for example)! Other than that... Good Job!
